Layer Farming Production Guide

12 chapters · Evidence-based · Written for Nigerian conditions

01Choosing the Right Layer Breed

Overview

Breed selection is the single most important decision in layer farming. The wrong breed for your climate or market leads to poor laying rates, high mortality, and low returns — regardless of how well you manage everything else.

Top Breeds for Nigerian Conditions

BreedAnnual EggsEgg WeightHeat ToleranceBest For
Isa Brown300–32062–65gModerateCommercial farms
Lohmann Brown305–31563–66gGoodLarge scale
Shika Brown250–27058–62gExcellentRural & peri-urban
Harco260–28060–63gGoodSemi-intensive
💡 Pro Tip: Source day-old chicks (DOCs) only from certified hatcheries like CHI Ltd, Zartech, or Obasanjo Farms. Avoid open-market chicks with unknown vaccination history.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Peak laying rate above 90% at 26–32 weeks
  • Good feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 2.0–2.3 kg feed per kg egg mass
  • Adaptability to battery cage or deep litter systems
  • Low mortality rate (<5%) under standard management
02Housing & Infrastructure Setup

System Options

  • Battery Cage System: Best for commercial scale. Higher capital cost but superior biosecurity, easier egg collection, and lower feed waste. Recommended for 500+ birds.
  • Deep Litter System: Lower startup cost. Suitable for small flocks (100–500 birds). Requires good ventilation and regular litter management.

Space Requirements

SystemSpace/BirdFeeders/100 birdsDrinkers/100 birds
Battery Cage450–500 cm²Built-inBuilt-in nipple
Deep Litter0.09–0.12 m²3 troughs3 bell drinkers

Orientation & Ventilation

Orient the poultry house East–West (long axis) to minimise direct sun on the birds. In hot climates like the Niger Delta, ensure sidewall height of at least 2.5m and open sides with wire mesh. Install ceiling fans or tunnel ventilation for flocks above 2,000 birds.

⚠️ Common Mistake: Never site the house in a low-lying area prone to flooding. Waterlogged litter causes coccidiosis and ammonia buildup — two of the leading causes of flock loss in southern Nigeria.
03Pullet Management (0–17 Weeks)

Brooding Phase (Week 1–4)

Maintain brooder temperature at 35°C (week 1), reducing by 3°C per week until ambient temperature is reached. Use infrared bulbs or gas brooders. Ensure adequate space: 100 chicks per 1m² brooder space in week 1.

Weekly Targets

Age (wks)Body Weight (g)UniformityFeed/Day (g)
4280–320>80%28–32
8650–720>80%45–50
121,050–1,150>85%68–72
161,380–1,450>85%85–90
💡 Weigh a random 10% sample of birds weekly. If body weight is more than 10% below standard, increase feed allocation. Uniform pullets lay earlier and more consistently.

Light Management

During the growing phase (0–17 weeks), do NOT increase light. Maintain 8–10 hours of light daily. Increasing light before 17 weeks stimulates early lay and causes small eggs and reproductive problems.

04Nutrition & Feeding at Point of Lay

Nutritional Requirements for Laying Hens

NutrientRequirementFunction
Crude Protein16–17%Egg white, feathers
Metabolisable Energy2,700–2,750 kcal/kgBody maintenance & production
Calcium3.5–4.0%Eggshell formation
Phosphorus (available)0.35–0.40%Bone health, metabolism
Methionine0.35–0.38%Limiting amino acid for egg mass
Lysine0.75–0.85%Muscle and egg protein

Feed Consumption Benchmarks

A well-managed layer at peak production consumes 110–120g of feed per day. Higher intake without a corresponding increase in laying rate indicates feed quality problems or disease. Track daily feed intake as your primary health indicator.

⚠️ Calcium deficiency is the #1 cause of soft-shelled and thin-shelled eggs in Nigeria. Always provide ground limestone (oyster shell) as a free-choice supplement — especially in the afternoon when hens form shells overnight.
05Egg Collection, Grading & Storage

Collection Schedule

Collect eggs a minimum of 3 times daily (morning, midday, and late afternoon) to reduce breakage, soiling, and egg eating behaviour. In battery cage systems, collection is easier and can reduce labour to twice daily.

Egg Grading Standards

GradeWeightPrice PremiumMarket
Jumbo (AA)>70g+30–40%Hotels, supermarkets
Large (A)60–70gStandardOpen market, retailers
Medium (B)50–60g–10–15%Bulk buyers, bakeries
Small (C)<50g–25–30%Wholesale/processing
💡 Sort eggs immediately after collection. Never wash eggs before sale in Nigeria's informal markets — the natural cuticle protects against spoilage. For formal retailers, use a dry brush only.

Storage

Without refrigeration, eggs remain marketable for 14–21 days in dry, ventilated storage below 25°C. With a cold room (4–7°C), shelf life extends to 3 months. Store eggs large end up to keep the yolk centred and prevent air cell movement.

⚠️ Newcastle Disease and Infectious Bronchitis are the most devastating diseases for laying hens in Nigeria. Never skip boosters at week 6 and 16. Check vaccine cold chain — never use vaccines stored above 4°C.
